Bees, Books, and Travels highlights black-owned bookstores around the U.S.! It was created by Bria Gambrell (who graciously helped curate our Black Girl Magic Book list.) This is the first in a series of three mini-interviews from brilliant black girl creatives.

Favorite book you read last year?

Last year I challenged myself to only read books by people of color because we so often get caught up in the wave of white supremacy and capitalism that we forget there are stories about us and for us that are rooted in joy. So one of my favorite books I read last year was the Parable series by Octavia Butler. While it’s not rainbows and butterflies by any means, it reminded me of Black women’s resilience and ingenuity.

A book that had a major impact on you?

Almost every book has a deep deep impact on me. I reflect and write about a lot of pieces that mean a lot to me, and I think one that stands out right now as I navigate life is How We Get Free by Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor. It’s about how we can continue our fight towards justice from a Black feminist lens. Because at the end of the day, Black feminist theory will be our savior.

If you could have a conversation with any woman who would it be?

If I could have a conversation with any woman I would want to talk to Toni Morrison. I could imagine being in her presence would feel whimsical and moving. I would just love to get to know her and soak up her generational wisdom ❤️
